Nanotechnology in Every Wilson Golf Club Now a Reality

On its 90th anniversary, Wilson announced the company's adoption of nanotechnology in the production of Wilson golf clubs and balls. Molecular nanotechnology is the latest technology being developed by the U.S. Department of Defense and NASA for use in their military and aerospace products.

Reportedly, it took two and a half years for Wilson to make the nanotechnology work for its golf clubs. Wilson territory manager John White announced that the new technology will make titanium obsolete.

In a nutshell, nanotechnology controls individual molecule-building reactions to form complex molecular structures. It bonds materials together by eliminating microscopic separations. The result is a product that is lighter, stronger and more stable.

Wilson Golf Clubs: In Step with Tomorrow

While nanotechnology is still at its infancy stage, Wilson has found a way to make it work for its golf club production division. Wilson revealed that the technology is currently present in its leading and newly released golf club models, particularly in the design of the shaft.

The shaft of the golf club connects the grip to the head and, like the grip, must be basically round in cross section. Most modern golf club shafts are made of either steel or carbon-fiber. You could have guessed that the carbon fiber variety is more expensive and that's because it is lighter than steel. Some golfers prefer to hit a golf ball with a carbon-fiber club because of the nice vibration or feel that it gives.

By producing carbon-fiber shafts with nanotechnology, Wilson makes the crown lighter and transfers the weight to where it matters the most--at the bottom of the club.
